Asava / Arista
द्रवेषु चिरकल्सथं द्रव्यं यथ्सन्धितं भवेत् - असवारिस्त भेदैस्तु प्रोचय्ते बेशजोचितं
Water in which drugs kept for long periods getting fermented are known as Asava and Arista. Asava in prepared in cold water without boiling the drugs whereas arista is prepared by boiling.
Asava and Arishta are unique dosage form discovered by Ayurveda having indefinite shelf life and it was said that the “older the better it is”. Because this dosage form has an inherent attribute of continuous hydro-alcoholic extraction and probably formation of natural analogues of the chemical compounds present in the medicinal plants.
Advantages asava-arishta is a novel yet least exploited continuous hydro alcoholic extraction method, being traditionally used in Ayurveda. This advanced dosage form probably results into transformation of several phytochemical compounds present in the herbs used to prepare it and thereby either rendering them less toxic or more potent, besides helping in their faster absorption. Generally in process of asava & arista that is either swaras(hima) for asava and kwatha (phanta) for arista are mixed with Madhura dravyas guda, shakara,madhu,and sandhana dravayas such as dhataki pushpa kinva(yeast) are added in to it. The process of fermentation produces self-generated alcohol which acts as preservative
